The history of webvpn.org, from the free web proxy that ran from 2010 to a VPN directory and now independent privacy guides, plus how the site is written and funded.

## Timeline

- 2010 to 2017. webvpn.org ran a free browser-based web proxy. Visitors typed a URL, the server fetched the page and returned it under the webvpn.org address. The proxy handled millions of page views and was linked from proxy lists, forums and blogs around the world.

- 2017 to 2019. The site became a VPN directory, listing apps by platform: iPhone and iPad, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome, Firefox and Android TV. The platform URLs on this site preserve those paths.

- 2019 to 2025. The domain lapsed and was used by unrelated parties for spam pages in Chinese. That content was never part of this project and none of it has been restored.

- 2026. The domain returned to its original purpose as an information resource. The proxy was not relaunched, for the reasons explained on the web proxy page. The site now publishes guides only.

## What the site publishes

Guides to hiding an IP address on each platform and in each browser, an honest assessment of VPN safety, an explanation of no-logs policies and how to verify them, and platform hubs describing how VPN apps work on iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome, Firefox and Android TV.

Every article states its answer in the first paragraph, gives numbered steps where steps exist, and describes the limits of each method. Facts about providers are taken from the providers' own published pages, court records and named security reports, and are linked to the source where one exists online.

## What the site does not do

- It does not operate a proxy or any other service that carries your traffic.

- It does not collect accounts, passwords or personal data. The privacy page describes the small amount of technical data the host records.

- It does not rank providers by affiliate payout. Where a provider is named, it is because its policy, audits or court history are on the public record.

- It does not promise anonymity. Every method described has limits, and the articles state them.

## Funding and independence

The site is maintained by a small independent team and funded by its owners. There is no sponsorship from VPN companies. If the site ever accepts affiliate links, they will be labelled on the page where they appear and this section will be updated.

## Corrections

If you find an error, a link that no longer works, or a provider statement that has changed, write to the address on the contact page. Corrections are made to the article and the updated date on the page changes to reflect the edit.
